I’ve been tutoring high school students since I was still in high school myself. I was originally drawn to the idea by my own experiences taking the SAT. As a strong test taker, I scored very highly in my first attempt despite relatively little practice. I always had doubts about putting work into standardized test prep - too many times I’d heard the myth that “you can’t study for the SAT.” Nevertheless, I was persuaded to retake it and bought into pushing for a higher score. And, after several focused weeks of analyzing every practice test, I noticed something remarkable — it felt like I had cracked a code.
I had come to truly understand the SAT: where before I was relying on natural ability to overcome my ignorance about the test, I was now anticipating the intention behind each question, often able to recognize the exact concept the authors wanted me to use. I went into test day with peaking confidence, and my newfound insights proved invaluable: I came away with a perfect score of 2400.
Soon after, a friend was looking for test-taking help, and my tutoring career began. I quickly discovered a passion for conveying the tips and tricks I had learned, and embraced the challenge of communicating my knowledge in a way that would be meaningful for that particular individual. After helping him raise his SAT score over 300 points, I knew I had the skills and desire to continue helping students.
Upon graduating from college, I decided to make tutoring a full time pursuit. Nothing beats the satisfaction of helping to bring about that “lightbulb” moment for a student. Furthermore, I hope and believe that my focus on critical thinking and self-awareness helps students build habits that go beyond the exam or classroom, inspiring more thoughtful young adults.
